Birthday Fun – Girls and Boys

This week’s Sunday Sketch – SS040 is a great simple layout.  Pick your colors, pick your theme and you are off to the races.

I wanted to make Birthday cards and the colors chosen for these two cards were inspired by two different color challenges.

The sweet color combo from CTD628 spurred the card for a girl and the bright colors from CAS405 were perfect for a boy.

With Sprinkles on Top:

Given the colors, Pink, Lavender, Yellow and Green, I chose to fussy cut four Ice Cream Cones from one of the patterned sheets found in the Ice Cream Corner Designer Series Paper pack that had Ice Cream in those colors.  The reverse side of the patterned paper was the colorful Sprinkles.

I had cut a two-inch strip from which the Cones were cut and decided to add the Sprinkles side on the top Basic White panel and use the white space top and bottom for the sentiments.  “Happy Birthday” is from the Art Gallery stamp set and the “With Sprinkles on Top” is from the Sweet Ice Cream stamp set.   I chose the ink color, Gorgeous Grape, because it was dark enough to contrast with the patterned papers.

The Ice Cream Cones needed to be separated from the background to ensure that they remained the focal point.  When I placed the Ice Cream Cones on to the patterned paper, they got lost.  I needed to separate the Ice Cream Cones from the background to ensure that they remained the focal point of the card.

As this was going to be a card for a girl, I wanted to introduce more of the pink color.  There are many shades of pink and I cycled through the current Stampin’ Up! pinks but they were not bright enough.  In my scrap bin, I found a piece of Regal Rose cardstock and I really liked how the small circles, die-cut with the Layering Circle Dies support the Ice Cream Cones.

The second tilted panel is Mint Macaron to introduce more green color.  For the third (3½” x 5”) panel, I chose to use the soft colored dotted patterned paper from the retired Birthday Bouquet Designer Series Paper as it, too, had an Ice Cream Cone motif.

To finish off the card, the fourth (4” x 5¼”) panel is So Saffron for the yellow and the card base is Highland Heather for the lavender.

It’s a Celebration:

I wanted to use the new stamp set, Circle Celebration for the boy’s card.  Therefore, I stamped a series of images in the challenge colors on to a Basic White panel, supported it with a Poppy Parade panel.  The third (3½” x 5”) panel is a piece of Pacific Point, Bright’s Collection Designer Series Paper and the fourth (4” x 5¼”) panel is Basic White and the card base is Just Jade.

The sentiment, Happy Birthday, from the By the Dock stamp set is stamped in Pacific Point and die-cut with the Layering Circle Dies matted with a Poppy Parade die-cut circle from the Stitched Shapes Dies.  I added a little flag using the Just Jade In-Color Ribbon.

This card may not be completely Clean and Simple with the several layer sketch and less white space but the sentiment circle is indeed clean. I just loved the color combination!

Two fun cards to make using the same sketch layout but giving you a two very different looks.
