Basic Patterns Decorative Masks – Weekend Technique Challenge #2

Continuing with this week’s Weekend Challenge to keep you stamping exploring Stencils and some of the techniques that you can do with them, I created my card using Embossing Paste. This is an excellent way to use Decorative Masks to create dimension on your projects.

I chose to try the Slim Line card design over at Freshly Made Sketches – FMS482 and incorporate the colors suggested by the team over at CAS Color & Sketches Challenge – CAS416.

The Basic Pattern Decorative Mask I chose was the one with the Tree Trunks.  These trees reminded me of Birch Trees.  And the Birch trees reminded me of the ones at the lake where we had at our cottage.

The trees loosely represent my interpretation of the two vertical elements in the sketch.

And this is the result:

My steps:

• The Balmy Blue cardstock background panel (3¼” x 5¾”) was placed beneath the selected stencil.  I put a little temporary adhesive on the back and affixed it to my Silicone Craft Sheet. The corners of the stencil were then fixed with Painter’s Tape.  I used a Palette Knife to apply a thin skim coat of White Embossing Paste to the cardstock.  I also used the edge of the Palette Knife to add the Tree Bark markings. The stencil was removed and the panel was set aside to dry.
• Note:  It is important to clean your tools immediately after using the Embossing Paste because it dries quickly enough that removal of the remaining paste can be difficult, if not impossible, once dry.
• Introducing the challenge colors and the Cottage by the Lake theme, the Magenta Madness Muskoka Chair was die-cut from the In-Color 2020/2022 DSP pack using the retired Seasonal Layers Dies.  The Coastal Cabana Sun Shade was punched out with the Umbrella Builder Punch from one of the patterned sheets from the Butterfly Bijou Designer Series Paper pack.
• From a scrap of Silver Foil cardstock, I cut a slim pole to support the Sun Shade.
• Once the Birch Tree background panel was dry, I shaded the trees with a bit of color using the Light Crumb Cake Stampin’ Blend.
• The sentiment, Time for a new Adventure, from the Well Said stamp set was stamped in Balmy Blue ink on to a scrap of Basic White cardstock (2¾” x ½’).

With all the elements completed, everything was adhered to a Basic White card base (7” x 6” scored at 3½”) for the smaller version of a Slim Line card.

Creating dimension with Embossing Paste is a fun way to use Decorative Masks (stencils).  Embossing Paste can be mixed with Classic Ink Refills to create a variety of colors to match what you may want/need for the project concept you have in mind.
